A Declaration of Responsible Radio Radicaslism to express the Pacifica Mission at the liberated KPFT
We have a unique opportunity at KPFT to offer EVERY voice of EVERY voiceless
community and individual to bring their viewpoints and talents to our vast signal
area population.
There is a tradition of an all music weekend at KPFT which definitly precedes the hijacking- pre '92.
We have no intention of distrurbing that tradition, and with minor adjustments the music listener donors will be awarded their weekend territory. That particular narrow slice of whiteBoy music broadcast will be given not one more second of airtime at KPFT beyond that.
There is NO reason to believe this will have any effect whatsoever on legitimate pledge revenues which are over 75% weekend contributors in the period of time in the abscence of Democracy Now.
We can leave every volunteer in place and still have something around 12 hours daily of available airtime at kpft during the week.
We are committed to a proposal to allow every individual who can prove an ability to produce an hour of listenable radio which falls within a broad interpretation of the Mission, be allowed to go on the air at KPFT in this interim period, and that no one shall be awarded a programmers slot until everybody has been on the air. This will literally take months.... and need close oversight and training by a volunteer force of old Pacifica volunteers already in line to supply the necessary man hours to accomplish this goal.
All temporary programmers will be given an hour which they can supply live or on tape once they have passed muster or proved an acceptable level of proficiency at live radio by performing a dry run in the production studio and produced an unedited aircheck tape under watch.
All those who have proven radio experience will also be required to share this knowlege with those who wish to learn, and have a legitimate topic for pacifica Airwaves.
All temporary programmers will be requested but not required to demonstrate their ability to pitch and raise money for the station at some point during their time on the air.
This amounts to a 4 month pledge drive, minus the long pitches, with a certain amount of support where the communities represented wish to show it in the way that is somewhat legitimatly accepted as a standard in our radio tradition, but it should be clear that this cannot have any over-riding effect on the final acceptability of what goes on the air when the choices are to be made.
Only the really hard core community radio listeners will tune in exclusively,
around the clock to a sound like this, but i predeict that the greater community
will be tuning in an hour or two just out of curiosity, once we have promoted
this open radio project sufficiently, and the outreach will be contagious and
addicting.
We are making four exceptions to the ban on awarding any permanent slots into this great wealth of available airtime to immediately show some good faith in good radio to communities that have been left out by the hi-jacked pacifica under Garland Ganter, and they are
1. Jac Batiste, peace pipes, native american activist and broadcaster
2. 2 hours of Latin Music programming or music/publicAffairs mix
3. Hitaji, whose excellence, poetry and heart have been sadly missed by the exiled KPFT listeners
4. Buzzanco who has earned his autonomy for bring an academic and activist weight to KPFT on the grandest scale to date, and is respected by historians, activists and scholars throughout the world, especially during a time when there were so few hours of which we could all be proud.
The interim open radio project will provide a huge database of already produced radio from which to draw scheduled programming, once we decide how we are going to solidfy the schedule at KPFT, and there will be great participation from all commuities. The fact that white people are inherently no better at producing good radio, something that is not closely tied to educational or cultural privelege and will render uncomfortable and unruly 'balanced' community representation unnecessary.
The cross pollination of cultures will be guarenteed by the removal of the insider filters and power playing airtime claimstaking which plagues the programming issues at any popular community station. This is the truest Mission of Lew Hill's Dream and it is simply implicit in this open radio proposal and the mechanism of implementation.
The bullshit is getting heavy on the astroturf, but we are used to it, we are
in for the long haul and have no intention of giving up this struggle short
of total victory. We kicked ass for the whole damn network. Taking KPFT back
is just a matter of applying the same tactics point blank. We are Pacifica and
we are gonna fight like hell to prove it.
